Flood barriers go on display
PEOPLE in a high flood risk area of Oxford will have the chance to check out new flood protection equipment tomorrow.
The Environment Agency has spent £180,000 on flood barriers stretching more than 400 metres in a bid to protect homes on Osney Island.
The temporary barriers, stored at the Environment Agency's depot in Bridge Street, should protect up to 75 properties.
On Friday between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, residents will have the opportunity to see the barriers set up along 100m of riverbank in East Street.
In an emergency the barriers would also be deployed in West Street and South Street.
New lightweight pumps, which will work alongside the barriers to reduce the risk of flooding, will also be on display.
Oxford West and Abingdon MP Dr Evan Harris and Lord Mayor of Oxford Susanna Pressel are expected to attend.
EA experts will also be on hand to answer questions on the barriers and other flood management work carried out by the agency since last July.
