Residents' associations across the borough are urging locals to march to the Croydon Town Hall next Monday, (September 2) in protest against the Council's controversial parking proposals.

They want to lobby a meeting of the traffic management cabinet committee which will decide whether to extend the borough's controlled parking zones from 7am to 7pm seven days a week and continue operational hours beyond 7pm to midnight from Thursday-Saturday in the town centre.

Residents and traders will meet at 6pm next Monday outside the church in Canning Road and march to the Katharine Street for the 7pm meeting.

Kathy Court, founder of Croydon Residents Against Parking Proposals, said: "I still believe in people power.

"I'm disabled and I use a disabled bay so it's not going to effect me but the principle of what they're doing is so wrong."

Croydon Council has received 1,900 letters and e-mails of objection alone as well as numerous petitions bearing 7,000 signatures in total from residents and businesses.

Mrs Court added she was once a staunch Labour supporter: "We are meeting with Croydon South MP, Richard Ottaway, on September 9 and meeting with the Croydon Conservatives on September 19.

Conservative leader, Councillor Andrew Pelling: "I have contacted Ken Livingstone, Mayor for London. Croydon Council is telling locals they are proposing these restrictions because they are part of Ken Livingstone's plans but this has nothing to do with Ken."
