ABINGDON bassoonist Simon Payne and fellow musicians gave a free lunchtime concert at Wesley Memorial Church in Oxford.

The trio of bassoonists impressed the crowd with a series of tunes, from Tchaikovsky’s Jazz Waltz to the theme tune from Rumpole of the Bailey.

Mr Payne, a music administrator for the Orchestra of St John, said: “We did a mix from a big Jazz Waltz to the Carnival of the Animals.”

The show on Thursday, January 14, was one in a series of free drop-in concerts at the church in New Inn Hall Street. Mr Payne played there last year with an octet of bassoons, which he slimmed down for his latest gig.

The church’s family outreach worker, Janice Smith, said: “The idea of these concerts is to provide free music for anybody who wants to access free music.

“There’s no charge, the church is open, so some people come in to pray then leave. Some people stay and listen to the music.”
