MEET the silver band built from bric-a-brac. For the past 10 years, Regent Furniture and Books in Wantage arcade has donated all the proceeds from its little bric-a-brac stall to Wantage Silver Band, expressly to fund the purchase of quality instruments for junior players.
The donations have purchased tubas, trumpets, cornets and bugles. This month, the sum raised by the bookshop reached the grand total of £10,000.
Deputy band master Danny Dullforce said: “We are very grateful for this wonderful donation. We now have an excellent supply of instruments for our beginners to use.”
The donation of the latest cheque is timely, as a new set of beginners is starting with the band this autumn.
But the band said it always had room for more beginners.
On Sunday, it held an open afternoon at its hall at Tugwell Field, Reading Road, which gave people the chance to try instruments and meet players.
Anyone interested in joining the group can call band master Eileen Sykes on 01235 767541.
Wantage Silver Band is holding its annual concert on Saturday, October 17, at The Beacon, Portway, at 7.30pm.
