The Snow Dragon has lost none of its Christmas message over the years, making it the perfect festive show for Didcot’s Cornerstone.

Straight from the stable that produced The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and The Snail and the Whale, Snow Dragon continues to be one the Tall Stories’ major success stories, on this, its 10th anniversary tour.

The show features Billy, who has everything a young goat could need and more besides. He is looking forward to the annual visit of the legendary Snow Dragon, who will bring him even more goodies. But when Billy bumps into some hungry wolves in the forest, he learns his lesson fast.

“This is a good fun, silly show for all the family. The most important thing is the story, of course, but there is a message hidden in there,” co-director Toby Mitchell tells me.

“We wrote it ourselves to create a fun Christmas show about a world of animals who all believe in different things, so it is more appropriate now than ever.

So what can we expect? “Billy believes in the Snow Dragon, Hedgehog in the Snow Unicorn and Rosie in the Snow Goblin, but of course Billy must be right and has to have his way,” Toby tells me.

“So this is about Billy’s journey through the mystical forest and the lessons he learns along the way to show that it’s not about what you believe, it’s about being a nice person and respecting other people, with lots of singing, jokes, comedy, silliness and audience participation. It’s a lovely show.”

Aimed at the 3+ audience, Tall Stories has been working with this age group since its inception in 1997. “We take our audience very seriously while being very silly,” Toby explains. “But we aim to do for theatre what Pixar does for film. It’s storytelling for families.”
