Care homes ‘need more activities’

CARE homes in Oxfordshire need to provide more activities for residents, a report has warned.
Members of the Oxfordshire Local Involvement Network (LINk) recently visited 30 residential homes across the county.
And although their report to the county council’s adult services scrutiny committee said they witnessed many good examples of care, most providers didn’t do enough with their charges.
Report co-author Mary Judge said: “You can see from the report there is in many cases a good provision.
“But activities are a matter for concern. A list of weekly activities is often put up on notice boards, but in our opinion activities should involve being active.
“Some homes did have some interesting rotas of entertainment, but most have very little to get people through a long day.”
She said staff at the homes meant well, but were unable to provide the best activities because of a lack of training.
The council’s deputy director for joint commissioning, Sara Livadeas, said the council would take the issues raised on board.
