IT wasn’t the most glamorous school trip, but pupils in Didcot didn’t turn their noses up at a visit to a sewage treatment works.

Eleven children from Willowcroft Community School, in Mereland Road, were invited to the plant in Basil Hill Road on Tuesday to find out about waste, water, energy and how they can help to look after the environment.

The nine to 11-year-olds were given a tour by Thames Water staff and a talk from the Earth Trust’s education officer Clare Keighley.

Afia Opoku, 10, pictured, from Didcot, said: “I found the visit fascinating and educational.

“Now I know we need to be careful with what we put down the toilet and the drains.”

Teacher Cameron Lancaster, who accompanied pupils on the visit, said: “Thames Water staff were great hosts and Clare from the Earth Trust gave a very interesting talk.

“Our visit linked up with topics we have been studying including water usage, flooding and the River Thames.” Picture: OX57201 Antony Moore
