TOWN councillors say they have disproved district council claims Wallingford does not need a new car park.

Wallingford Town Council carried out a three-day survey after South Oxfordshire District Council shot down its calls for more spaces.

The town council says a new facility is vital for when 550 new homes are built. But the district council stood firm on its position.

From March 8 to March 10, town councillors studied movements in Castle Street, Thames Street, St George’s Road, Cattle Market, Waitrose, and Goldsmith Lane car parks from 11am to 1pm.

Organiser and former mayor Colin Dolton said demand often outstripped supply at 183-space Waitrose, 132-space Goldsmith Lane and 147-space Cattle Market car park.

He said: “In Goldsmiths Lane at noon on Saturday there were 14 cars queuing for spaces.

“We need to look at where there is space or land for a new car park to be built.”

The council is to allow 550 homes at Slade End Farm, leading to demand for more town centre parking.

Town Mayor Ros Lester said: “(District council leader) Ann Ducker is adamant there is not a problem with parking, but there is. We have some fantastic independent shops but we want people to be able to use them.”

Try using a bus, walking or cycling and not driving less than a mile into the town centre and expecting there to be a parking space for you.

It is not the parking that is the problem. It is the high rents, charity shops and allowing unwanted shops to establish in the town. Wallingford does not need any more charity shops although a new one is opening where Julian Graves was. Costa Coffee undoubtedly contributed to the demise of Bloc where rumour has it, a Subway is soon to open. We do not need a Subway as we already have an excellent Deli, a sandwich bar, The Lamb Cafe,Petits Coffee Shop and for those that want it, Greggs and Costa Coffee.

On the main square Wallingford now has a betting shop, a charity shop, soon to be yet another charity shop and Costa - appealing?

With high business rates, high rents and low footfall it is incredibly hard for an independent business to establish itself and Wallingford is sadly in severe decline.

Here we go again. An article about car parking gets hijacked by another protectionist who dismisses the article they are commenting on in the first sentence before going off on their oft repeated rant against competition.

How can people argue against charity shops? They raise money for charity for goodness sake. What better shop os there than that?
