JUSTIN Rose got himself into contention but was unable to follow up his US Open success with victory at the Travelers Championship.

The Hook golfer was within one shot of the lead after seven holes of his final round at TPC River Highlands, in Connecticut, yesterday. However, he missed a five-foot putt for par at the ninth and went on to make bogeys at 14 and 15, eventually carding 71 (+1) to finish in a tie for 13th place.

“I frittered it away a little bit towards the end,” Rose admitted. “I was just a little clumsy today when I needed to be sharp.

“Getting to nine under, having a chance and not being able to kind of finish it out cleanly probably shows more fatigue than anything.”

It had been a busy week for the 32-year-old, who made appearances on a number of top American television shows in the wake of his US Open victory.

Despite this, Rose was in contention for most of the tournament. An opening round of 67 (-3), which included four birdies in the space of five holes on the back nine, left him in touch with the leaders.

He then shot two rounds of 68 (-2) to go into the final day tied for seventh, three shots off the lead. The former Robert May's School pupil was two-under-par for his first seven holes yesterday, taking him to -9 and within a shot of the lead.

Rose could not complete the job, but that did not really dampen his mood.

“Being announced as the 2013 US Open champion, I couldn't help but smile before I hit my first tee shot,” the world number three said. “That's an achievement that I've been dreaming about.”

Rose is in action again this week, competing in the AT&T National, which gets under way at Congressional, in Maryland, later today. However, he then has two weeks off before returning to Britain for next month's Open Championship.
