THOUSANDS of people “went Victorian” in Wantage for a Dickensian evening.
Town leaders dressed up like characters from Charles Dickens novels and Wantage Silver Band played traditional carols as the town’s Christmas lights were illuminated. Mayor Fiona Roper said it was the “one of the best” lights switch ons so far.
She added: “We have had good feedback about extending the Christmas lights down the roads leading to the market place.
“You couldn’t get into any of the pubs. They were all so packed and the shops were heaving.”
Father Christmas entered the town centre in a sleigh, the market place was given over to a children’s fun fair and the folk trio Pandemonium played.
