COMMENT: Knee-jerk reaction to county flooding

First published in News

THERE is nothing worse than government by knee-jerk. While any flooding prevention announcements are to be welcomed, why are 10 schemes for Oxfordshire only being announced now, coincidentally three weeks after that catastrophic start to the year?

A proper measured and all-encompassing plan to this county and country’s increasing flooding problems is more desirable than a drip-drip-drip reaction to events.

I have said this many times before that until ALL of our Rivers, Steams and Watercourses are Dredged, Cleaned and maintained the problem of severe flooding will continue. Starting with the major rivers dredging should begin asap and where it allows the dredged material should be used on the banks to build up levies to heighten the banks. Sure this will cost a massive amount of money initially however it is a must for the country and will create jobs. We appear to have buckets of money to dish out to the EU daily and to all manner of foreign countries, it is way past time that OUR money was used to protect OUR country and OUR peoples properties.

Firstly there needs to be some evidence dredging will work. In a lot of places it would just be counter productive so - as this editorial comment rightly suggests - lets have a considered, holistic plan based on science instead of a knee-jerk response.

Why ? Because that is the way Government works in this country. The toffs in charge do what they like, and ignore the people who were stupid enough to vote them in in the first place.
Britain (not Great Britain) seems to be doing well in its quest to show the world how a totally incompetent government seems to be able to **** up everything it does. If these floods happened in another country, Cameron would be falling over himself to be the first to send aid to help them. But when it actually happens here - in his own country - he's too busy asking the Scots to "please don't leave us" .....while the South West slowly drowns.
Time to emigrate I think.
