Our deputy editor Richard Cave takes his pick of the week's best photographs and tells us why he reckons they make the grade

Antony Moore got some really beautiful shots of Kate Tempest at Oxford’s North Wall Arts Centre this week, the surprise being that Kate is a rapper – performing here at the Fringe preview Rapper Show. These shots were taken during the soundchecks under very challenging lighting conditions – Tony did a great job

Herald Series:

This was a submitted picture of artist Cai Yuan ‘painting’ on glass at a pop-up exhibition at The Plain, Oxford. By shooting from the other side the words seem to hover around the painter – it’s a great shot

Herald Series:

I pull a face a bit like this when I see huge bubbles, so I identified with the little girl reacting to the amazing creations of Felipe Gonzalez, captured brilliantly by Mark Hemsworth at Oxford Castle

Herald Series:

What’s not to like about this? It’s schoolboy humour, it’s rude word street names and Mark Hemsworth has cleverly framed the place in question underneath the – ahem – crotch of Peter East

Herald Series:

It was a hard news story – the horrendous attack on a shopkeeper in Littlemore. Damian Halliwell turned in great news shots. Well composed, nicely lit and capturing the pained expressions of the victim – great job

Herald Series:

I like this shot because it makes me nervous. A new two-metre crocodile had been flown in to Crocodiles of the World from Sweden. As owner Shaun Foggett carries it from the crate, all I can do is stare at the gaffer tape thinking I’d have wrapped it around a few more hundred times myself!

Herald Series:

Mark Hemsworth sent in a number of good images from this Junior Strictly event at Ducklington Primary. Here he chose to silhouette the contestants against the judges in the background. It’s a fine shot indeed
