Appeal over flats bid

Herald Series: Appeal over flats bid Appeal over flats bid

A planning appeal relating to a proposed care home which could be built at the former Wantage police station and magistrates court began yesterday.

Vale of White Horse District Council rejected plans to build 45 sheltered flats for the elderly in August, saying it would cause “substantial harm” to the character of Wantage Town Centre Conservation Area.

Churchill Retirement Living appealed against the decision and yesterday a government planning inspector began hearing both sides at Abingdon Guildhall.

Irrespective of whether it is a Care Home or Retirement Housing there is simply not the space at the former Police Station for 45 units. Churchill are guilty of trying to make a fast buck at the expense of the residents of Wantage by imposing housing that is simply not sustainable. However, as Mr Burgess does not live in the area he's not going to be affected so why should he care?
