THAMES Valley Police (TVP) has said it still wants to build a care home at the former Wantage Police Station and Magistrates Court.

The scheme for 44 retirement apartments, by Churchill Retirement Living, was refused by government planning inspector Ava Wood at a planning appeal in March.

She said the plan for the Church Street complex would have a negative effect on the character of Wantage Town Centre Conservation Area and nearby listed buildings.

But now, owners TVP and the Ministry of Justice have issued a joint statement with Churchill saying: “We were all very disappointed at the outcome of the appeal.

“We are carefully reviewing the implications of the planning inspector’s decision.

“Over the coming days and weeks we shall be working together to consider a revised scheme. This will aim to address the concerns expressed by the Vale of White Horse District Council planning department and the planning inspector.”

Wantage Town Council objected to the application and Vale council’s planning committee rejected the scheme on the same grounds as the planning inspector.
