EASTER Monday is often a day to rest and devour chocolate eggs, but for a Bampton father and daughter it will be spent cycling a total of 170 miles.

Jessie Grimwade and her Bampton Medical Practice GP father Peter, 47, will each ride 85 miles on static cycles outside Aston Pottery.

They will cover 170 miles together, the equivalent of the width of Costa Rica – where 17-year-old Jessie will visit in October as part of an environmental project.

The St Helen and St Katharine School, Abingdon pupil said: “I really like swimming and running but cycling is my least favourite exercise so I chose something that will be really challenging.

“We decided to make it the width of Costa Rica so it’s relevant to what I’m doing. We’re starting at 7.30am and will go for as long as we need to. It should take about eight hours but it depends on how many people feed me cake.”

Jessie, a waitress at the pottery’s cafe, has already raised £1,000 for the Raleigh International trip, which will also see her visit Nicaragua.

She will spend three weeks living in a rural community helping to provide water, housing and schools.

Jessie said: “It’s a really good charity and I really love geography. It looks like a really safe and secure way to do something helping other people.”

She is supported by 15-year-old brother Henry, a pupil at Our Lady’s Abingdon School and mum Helen, 46, a teaching assistant at Bartholomew School, Eynsham.
