Stretch of A420 will shut for seven weeks

Herald Series: Stretch of A420 will shut for seven weeks Stretch of A420 will shut for seven weeks

Part of a major road through Oxfordshire is to close for seven weeks this summer while it is repaired.

Oxfordshire County Council has said the A420 at Shrivenham is “worn out”.

It will be closed between the Watchfield Roundabout and the Lower Bourton junction from July 21 while work is done to rebuild the road and replace safety barriers.

The council has said it will introduce measures to prevent through traffic from using unsuitable local roads, but has not said what these are.

During the closure, the council recommends those going to Swindon use the A34 and M4 while local traffic uses the A417 east, A4185 south, A34 south and M4 west.

Why has it been allowed to fall so far that a main arterial route needs to be closed, surely negligence by OCC and now mass disruption with total closure as opposed to one lane being kept open and the use of traffic lights. What is wrong with night time working ??. Again OCC showing their hand of total dis regard for the motorist.

I note that there are other roads which on the face of it are far worse than this stretch, and what is being done about those ? As usual OCC = total disgrace, an author of note couldn't make up a story such as this.

'The council has said it will introduce measures to prevent through traffic from using unsuitable local roads'.

Presumably to stop HGVs turning off the A420 at Faringdon and cutting across to the A361 at Highworth?

Closing such a major route for 7 weeks only goes to show how inadequate the road system is in this part of the world....

But Faringdon, Highworth, Lechlade, Stanton in the Vale and Wantage are in for rather a disturbed summer, it would seem. As for encouraging even more traffic onto the pathetically inadequate A34, are they mad?

The A420 at this point has been in a terrible condition for a long time and we should be pleased that the County Council are at last going to completely rebuild the road. Yes the A34 is very busy but lorries are supposed to take the A34 and the M4 anyway. People complain about the state of the road and then also complain when the Council seek to improve matters!
