THIS year’s Harwell Village Feast was “England at its best”, according to visitors.
The annual village fete saw hundreds of people enjoying fairground rides and games despite persistent rain.
Among them was six-year-old Tommy Vereker, who didn’t mind the rain as he played Spiderman on a bungee ride.
The fun started in the morning with a parade of floats, judged by Vale of White Horse District Council chairman Mike Badcock, won by Harwell Primary School. He then officially opened the celebrations by firing a reproduction Civil War cannon.

He said: “It made quite a bang, and there was a lot of smoke – it made you realise what the “fog of war” was really about.
“They were so welcoming to me as chairman, even though it was raining you couldn’t help but enjoy yourself. It was England at its best – the Bank Holiday in the rain. No matter what happened it was going to go ahead.”
