Patients miss appointments over lack of parking

Herald Series: Bernard Stone Bernard Stone

THE parking problem at Wallingford’s only doctors’ surgery has become so bad some patients are missing appointments, according to the town council.

Now it is being proposed football pitches should be moved to create more parking spaces.

The Reading Road practice, which has 16,000 patients, shares car parking facilities with neighbour Wallingford Community Hospital and during the week there is a big demand for spaces.

The town council raised the issue last year but said there has been no improvement since.

Town councillor Bernard Stone said there was an urgent need for the problem to be addressed and suggested some green space next to the site should be used to create extra car parking spaces.

He added: “A large proportion of patients are elderly and need to park at the site and some of them have missed appointments because they have not been able to park. If anything, the problem is getting worse.”

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust said it was aware of the problem and had made it a priority to find a solution as soon as possible.

Why should the children who are out exercising loose their space to car drivers ? we are supposed to be encouraging our children to put down the game controllers and take part in real life not telling them you have to drive everywhere. I understand a few people have to drive, but the majority dont, Wallingford is not a large town, you can walk from one end to the other in half an hour or use the bus. Maybe the surgery staff need to lead by example and leave the car at home.

People who work in the hospital have to park somewhere and a few of them don't live in Wallingford. Maybe if it was a pay and display car park it would reduce the amount of people who actually park there and then walk to town or to take dogs for a walk. Why should parks be taken over by car parking when able bodied people can walk the short distance..
