MORE than 20 people from Oxfordshire have been awarded accolades in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Three people have been made Knights Bachelor (Kt):

  • Professor Colin Brian Blakemore, FRS. Director Centre for the Study of the Senses, School of Advanced Study, University of London. For services to scientific research, policy and outreach.
  • Professor John Bernard Pethica, FRS. Chief Scientific Adviser National Physical Laboratory and Physical secretary and vice-president, The Royal Society. For services to science.
  • Professor Richard Rustom Kharsedji Sorabji, CBE. Honorary Fellow Wolfson College Oxford and Professor Emeritus, King's College London. For services to philosophical scholarship.

Those made CBEs (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) are:

  • Professor Martin Biddle, OBE. Archaeologist. For services to archaeology.
  • Sonny Leong. For political service.
  • Professor Lesley Ann Page. President Royal College of Midwives. For services to midwifery.
  • OBEs, which are Officers of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, have been given to: Amanda Sara Cooper. Director of Information, Thames Valley Police. For services to policing in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.
  • Anne Kelaart, DL. For services to the rural community in Oxfordshire.
  • Professor Polly Roy. Professor of Virology London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. For services to virus research.
  • John Andrew Simpson. Chief Editor Oxford English Dictionary. For services to literature.

People made MBEs, Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, are:

  • Robin Aitken. Co-director Oxford Food Bank. For services to vulnerable people.
  • Thomas David Cairns. Co-director Oxford Food Bank. For services to vulnerable people.
  • David Snowdon. Managing director Pristine Condition. For services to health and safety at work and for charitable services in Oxfordshire.
  • British Empire Medals (BEM) have been handed to: Anthony James Betteridge. For services to basketball.
  • Ronald Stanley Bridle. For services to the communities in Goring, Oxfordshire and Streatley, Berkshire.
  • Carole Chalton. Day support manager, Abingdon Alzheimer's Club, Oxfordshire. For services to older people.
  • June Geraldine Keep. Fundraiser, Churchill Hospital. For services to kidney patients in Oxfordshire.
  • Janice Veronica Markey. For services to the community in Harwell, Oxfordshire.
  • Gary Norman Mattingley. Station manager Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. For services to protecting communities from flooding.
  • Helen Elizabeth Stewart. For services to neighbourhood planning in Thame, Oxfordshire.

A Thames Valley Police officer has been acknowledged in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

• Assistant Chief Constable Brendan O’Dowda was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal. The Kidlington resident is the first South East Regional Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for Serious and Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism.

A servicewoman from RAF Benson was also honoured:

  • Group Captain Victoria Gosling MBE, based at RAF Benson near Wallingford, has been appointed an OBE for her commitment to the air base and to adaptive sports.
