ENGINEERS are still working to fix a burst pipe which caused more than 50 residents to complain about “smelly” tap water.

A burst pipe in Culham caused low water pressure across Abingdon.

Thames Water is re-routing water around the network while it repairs the pipe but said some customers could still experience low water pressure.

The company insisted the water has always been safe to drink.

Bottled water is currently available at Royal British Legion, 25 Spring Road, OX14 1AH.

Residents complained to Thames Water of low water pressure and other about it being "cloudy, smelly and metallic-tasting" after the pipe burst on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning they woke to find thousands of water bottles piled in the street outside their homes – without any explanation from the company.

Thames Water apologised the following day and explained that a compound in the lining of the pipes can produce an odour and spread through the water supply when a pipe bursts.

It said the “compound” posed no health risk and the water was safe to drink.
