A NESTING bird could delay a power company's plans for draining Thrupp Lake, at Radley, until summer.

The old gravel pit is at the centre of a dispute about using it for dumping spent fuel ash from Didcot Power Station.

'We have had to delay our work following the discovery of an active bird's nest. It is important to do the right thing'

npower spokesman Kelly Brown

The delay has been welcomed by Save Radley Lakes campaigners who are calling for a halt to all works.

But RWE npower has insisted it is vital that the lake is used to dump ash to ensure continuous electricity generation.

The company said it would postpone some construction works at Thrupp Lake because of evidence of an active coot's nest near the edge of the lake.

Work may be held up until "late summer" according to the firm.

Independent ecologists, working on behalf of the company, found the nest and work around it was suspended.

Ecologist Charlie Gibson said: "Coots are not rare, but it is extremely important that birds are not disturbed once they have started nesting.

"RWE npower is committed to protecting local wildlife and following our advice has suspended work that would affect birds until later in the year."

Npower was granted planning permission in January and said it would be continuing with preparations for the creation of an ash lagoon at Thrupp Lake.

The works, however, will be limited to protect birds nesting in the area.

Save Radley Lakes campaigner Marjorie White said: "This is really good news.

"For once RWE npower is doing the right thing after so much bad publicity.

"The discovery of the nest will delay work at the lake until later in the year but it is only a delay.

"We and thousands of other people want to see the whole project stopped to protect this beautiful wildlife area from destruction."

John Rainford, manager of Didcot A power station, said: "We have always said that we will do the right thing ecologically in this area, that is why we have an independent ecologist supervising all operations on Thrupp lake.

"It is disappointing that we are not able to complete de-watering ahead of winter generation, and we will have to look at how this will affect the power station's operations."

Company spokesman Kelly Brown added: "We have had to delay our work at the lake following the discovery of the active bird's nest.

"It is important to do the right thing. The discovery of the nest clearly pushes back our construction works possibly until the late summer."

  • Save Radley Lakes campaigners will be on the march again today.

Protesters will gather outside Abingdon's Guildhall at 1pm to hear speeches and hear a progress report on the campaign.

After more speeches by the lake, the march will then continue to a meeting at the Bowyer Arms pub in Radley.

said John Rainford.

This proves that winter generation at Didcot will happen and that means it was false to say "there is no alternative to dumping toxic ash from Didcot into Thrupp Lake at Radley."

RWE is still dedicated to "Really Wrecking Environments" however, as 550 marchers saw when they visited Radley Lakes on Saturday. Every tree on every island has gone and many trees around the lake have gone too, including even the magnificent old chestnut on the South East corner of the lake. That was called "clearing essential vegetation" by a company that is out of control.

The Rhineland and Westfalia Energy company, RWE , appears to be R eally W ithout E thics.

RWE should worry about the internationally growng campaign against them, the latest posting being http://www.iarca.net/textos/index.php?x=2422

NPOWER COOTS

Npower speak with forked tongues, they are devious and ruthless.

They chose recently not to inform the High Court of their knowledge of a pending Public Enquiry regarding Radley Lakes. An infamous draconian injunction was obtained that threatens us all.

If successful, the designation of a ‘Town Green’ status will prohibit npower’s plans forever and the spectacular 14-acre lake and its wildlife will be retained for future generations.

“Some essential maintenance would occur prior to dewatering”, said npower. Immediately, forty contractors flattened the 14-acre lake area and its islands; hundreds of trees were destroyed, many 40 years old and without permission from the Forestry Commission. Their risk, maybe a paltry £2,500 fine?

Coinciding with the protest march on Saturday 10th March and as the sponsoring of the BBC ‘Red Nose Campaign’ builds up, npower announced an immediate postponement of work as ‘an active coots nest had been observed by their independent ecologist’. What puff and nonsense!

When tree felling was commencing a contractor was photographed destroying a swan’s nest. Barbed wire placed at the waters edge has deterred further nesting attempts. Whilst the incident has been reported, npower claim not to have destroyed an ‘active nest’. Disturbing the water birds with powerboats, even with children aboard, has disturbed local residents even more.

If npower were hairdressers and Britney Spears had asked for ‘just a trim’, they would put 40 demon barbers to work, finish 90% of the work and then declare: “the independent npower nurse has found a nesting pair of nits in your eyebrows and we have immediately stopped work; however, in a few weeks we have plans for complete disembowelment”.

No doubt npower have now sent their contractors to the Brazilian Rain Forest to prune a few roses? Just routine maintenance of course!

Npower at Didcot have replied to people who dare to complain saying there is no alternative to filling in Thrupp Lake; the nation's 24/7 energy supply together with Didcot's economy are at risk and it was a very tough decision. Work that one out!

This letter ends with a suitable bird call to npower; the reader can guess which one, it isn't a pigeon and is a bit of a howler.

This is the stuff of childrens' fairy-tale fantasy!

"Energy Giant stopped by a Coot"

"birdpower beats npower!"

"Coot causes Energy Crisis"

So, if Mr Rainford is right, then a pair of coots are threatening the energy supply of the nation! Really? So why is this not front page news in the Nationals? Evidently, because Mr Rainford's credibility has become more than a little over stretched of late, and rightly so.

However the coots had better watch out! They are obviously violating the injunction (by encamping on npower's lake). Maybe the real problem is that npower's very posh, and expensive, lawyers do not want to get their feet wet!

Now, where did I put that looking glass?

Npower's crocodile tears over the Coot's nest are really sickening. If they are so concerned about wildlife, why did they not stop work on 25th February, when their contractors found a Swan's nest, instead of kicking it into the water and then chasing the Swans around the Lake in motorboats. Perhaps it is because they had not yet cut down all the trees and intended to continue with their vandalism (carried out without the required consent from the Forestry Comission).
A scarecrow has now been erected on the site of the Swan's nest. A gesture typical of such a crass uncaring company.

Just as Save Radley Lakes were publicising their Protest March NPower have to try and steal a "march" on us. Well you'll have to try harder than that. Everyone knows that having wrecked the area they have to put a positive spin on their actions and Mr. and Mrs Coot seem to fill the bill (pardon the pun) But what about the kingfisher family that had its nest destroyed and the swan family - they don't count because it was before the 1st March! What a difference a day makes! However there is no difference in RWE NPower - it is still the mean-spirited organisation that destroys an area which could become a Town Green in April. They have managed without their 24/7 ash disposal facility for two years - so it wasn't as imperative as they made out, was it!

There was also the duck nest with eggs, found on 13th February, the day before the trees came down, by the "independent ecological expert", hired by Npower, in front of witnesses. The witnesses, including representatives from National England and the Environment Agency will have realised that the eggs, although damaged by a raiding bird, were this year's eggs and that that indicated that birds were already nesting. A crows nest was also found by the same group of people in a tree on one of the islands. No attempt was made to verify if it was in use. Photographs of both events were taken. The same experts were made aware of the activities of the kingfisher but sadly on that day the noise around the lake, mainly due to the goons, who kept coming to check on the environmental survey for otters, was too great. Also the clever company RWE npower had already hired a company to scare away the kingfishers and prevent them from nesting. This company appears to have started work early on 13th February and were also disturbing the North and East shores of the lake and covering them with red and white tape, even before and during the otter survey. The kingfishers would therefore have deserted any nest from that day and were not seen by the independent experts.

RWE npower do care about the Environment. They care about trashing it.

And SS stands for Swan Stuffers.

You are right about Really Wrecking Environments, a song that was sung by a crowd of over 500 in town last weekend, a crowd including our mayor and our MP.
