IT WAS World War II’s landmark battle of the skies which saw the RAF’s decisive victory over the German Luftwaffe.

Now to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Royal Mail has unveiled range of six new stamps remembering the battle during a ceremony at RAF Brize Norton.

The stamps were released at military bases around the UK yesterday. The collection features a stamp showing two spitfires flying alongside each other and one showing pilots stood round an aircraft.

For the unveiling postman Jem Johnson was on hand to stand beside a Royal Mail van with the stamp logo on the back, next to a Second World War Douglas C47 Dakota transport plane.

The Carterton resident, who has been a postman for 12 years, added: “It was fantastic being next to the plane. Even thought it played no part in the battle of Britain it played a major part in the war.

“It was a privilege to see it that close.”
