CONCERNS about the safety of the A420 were raised yesterday following the death of a man in his 70s in a crash on the road on Tuesday.

He was one of four people killed in 24 hours of chaos on Oxfordshire’s roads.

The names of those who died had still not been made public last night.

On Tuesday, Thames Valley Police said the 70-year-old man had been killed in a four-vehicle collision on the A420 near Faringdon at about 9am that morning.

A 43-year-old woman, from Abingdon, was killed following a crash in Sutton Courtenay on Monday afternoon, while the driver and passenger of a black Vauxhall Astra died after their vehicle crashed on the M40 on Monday night.

Yesterday police were unable to say whether the pair had been identified and whether their families had been informed and could not confirm the identities of the 70-year-old man or 43-year-old woman.

Lorry driver Paul Livingstone, who regularly drives on the A420, said it and other roads in the county were dangerous and needed more safety measures.

The 52-year-old, from Arncott, who drives 44-ton cryogenic tankers carrying liquid oxygen and nitrogen said: “It’s the normal type of thing that happens, especially around Oxfordshire at the moment.

“They are so tragic and as a driver you pick up on these things.

“The whole road needs to be no overtaking and I would put the average speed camera check in .”

The crash on the A420 happened near the village of Littleworth.

Mary Poole, who has lived there for 47 years, said: “The road is a nightmare and I have found if I want to go to Faringdon I will turn left to Oxford and turn back around just for safety reasons, for peace of mind.

“The road has been the same since I have been here but I would like to think something can be done for the youngsters growing up in Littleworth .”

A number of people also commented on social media to express their concerns about the safety of the A420.

Martin Barnett wrote on Facebook: “That road has always been bad for accidents, speed limits don’t stop bad driving.”

Jen Cordell, also commenting on Facebook, wrote: “It’s the worst road I’ve driven on.”

Thames Valley Police did not respond to requests for comment regarding the crashes.
