PLANS for 91 homes south of Burford were rejected by councillors at a meeting on Monday night after attracting hundreds of objections.

Hallam Land Management had applied to West Oxfordshire District Council to build the development on land west of Shilton Road, with half of the properties proposed as affordable.

The scheme would also have included a care and retirement complex featuring a 90-bed care home and 78 assisted or supported living homes.

Hallam Land Management said: “The application site is in an appropriate location for development to address the shortfall because it is suitable, available now and capable of being delivered well within the next five years.”

But in a report to councillors, planning officers of the district council said they were “of the opinion that the proposed the development does not relate well to Burford itself”.

The council received 427 objections against the proposal, including from Burford Golf Club, Burford Garden Centre and the Burford Chamber of Trade.

Oxfordshire County Council, the highways authority, also had objections over a transport assessment carried out by the developer.
