WEST Oxfordshire residents have been urged to voice their opinions on proposals to close some of the county’s household waste recycling centres including Dix Pit near Stanton Harcourt.

Oxfordshire County Council wants to reduce the number of facilities from seven to three or four and change opening hours at remaining sites to save £350,000 a year. Its consultation ends on Monday.

The three areas identified by the county to need a waste and recycling centre are:

• Central North Oxfordshire – this would mean closing Ardley and Alkerton and replacing them with a new site

• Oxford – expanding or replacing Redbridge

• Central South Oxfordshire – expanding or replacing Drayton.

These proposals do not include retaining the one remaining centre in West Oxfordshire – Dix Pit.

However, if the opening hours are reduced across all centres Oxfordshire County Council has said it may be able to offer a fourth site.

West Oxfordshire District Council cabinet member for environment David Harvey said: “When the proposals are considered by the cabinet on October 14, I will be urging my colleagues to make the most robust response possible.

“It is a short-term gain for Oxfordshire County Council that would severely hinder residents and local businesses.”
