A MAN was pushed into a canal after being robbed on a towpath in central Oxford.

The 38-year-old was walking from Hythe Bridge Street towards Jericho on what Thames Valley Police said was a busy night, between 7.45pm and 8pm last Friday.

The force has only just released details of the incident and says it does not have a description of the suspected robber.

The victim was assaulted from behind by the other man, who stole cash before pushing him into the canal.

He managed to get out of the canal and was found lying on the towpath by two passers-by.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital but was later discharged.

PC Isaac van den Eshof said; “This was a busy Friday night and I believe that there would have been people around who witnessed what happened.

"If anyone has information I would urge them to contact Thames Valley Police on 101."
