A WORN-OUT road is driving people round the bend, with traders saying it is causing damage to cars almost on a daily basis.

Pothole-ridden Main Road into Carterton South Industrial Estate is giving both business owners and customers a headache, and they are now demanding urgent repairs.

But Oxfordshire County Council has said there are no immediate plans to resurface Main Road.

Chris Hughes, 30, who runs Oxford German Car Specialists, said the street has been a problem for almost two years.

He services a lot of sports cars through his business, and is worried the state of the road could put customers off coming to him.

Mr Hughes, who lives in Abingdon, said: “We are frustrated – it’s in an unacceptable condition, despite several attempts to get this rectified over the years. Having spoken with other businesses, they share the same opinion.

“We contribute thousands per year in business rates and a reasonable quality road surface is one of the most basic requirements.”

Mr Hughes has set up an online petition, asking people to support his bid to get the council to fix the road.

He added: “We had one guy recently who scuffed his wheel as he was driving away from us.

“He’s just had all four wheels replaced as well. Getting it replaced again can cost £50 to £100.

“We have lost sales because of the condition of this road.”

Phil Scott, who owns Carterton Auto Repair next door to Mr Hughes’ business, said he had been campaigning for resurfacing for years. The Carterton town councillor said: “I’ve had meetings on site with Oxfordshire County Council.

“They have agreed it is terrible but they haven’t done anything .”

Landlord of the industrial estate Michael Bennett is having 10 more units built on the site, ready for traders to move into in June.

He said he was worried the road would put some people off , adding: “We will be bringing employment to the estate, to Carterton and West Oxfordshire district.

“We deserve and demand better support and service.”

County council spokeswoman Emily Reed said: “The deteriorating condition of roads is a problem across the country.

“The government acknowledged this in last autumn’s budget statement which confirmed that additional money would be made available to councils to fix potholes.

“The council is awaiting the details of this and other funding that the government is making available for highway maintenance.

“At present there are no plans to resurface Main Road but we will continue to repair unsafe potholes as and when they occur.”
