VILLAGE youngsters ran a charity car wash in the rain so their Kenyan counterparts could eat porridge.

The children of Longworth Youth Club near Faringdon came out in force for their annual fundraiser on Saturday.

They braved the drizzle to scrub, buff and polish a steady stream of cars while serving hot drinks, cakes and bacon rolls to the waiting drivers inside the village hall.

Asking for donations from drivers they raised £344.50 for Oxfordshire-based charity African Children's Fund which helps youngsters their age in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

As it costs 7p to provide a child with a mug of porridge through African Children's Fund's Porridge Clubs – ensuring children regularly attend school – the efforts of the young car washers will enable the charity's Kenyan partners to provide nearly 5,000 mugs of porridge.

Tamsyn Wymer, events coordinator for the charity, said she was delighted with the children's "amazing" effort.

African Children's Fund was set up in 2006 by Peter and Dee Tyrer, who lived in Longworth.

Mr Tyrer was killed in a car crash in the Kenyan capital Nairobi in 2011 during a three-week charity mission to the country.
