Officers from Oxfordshire County Council are investigating a possible gas leak at a Headington primary school this week.
Reports have come in over the past few weeks of potential problems at Windmill Primary School in Margaret Road.
Councillor Roz Smith confirmed the work would be ongoing throughout the half term but said it was not believed to be a serious issue.
She said: "We've had reports of gas leaks outside the school. It's very minor but on and off we have occasionally smelled gas and have finally come and had a quick investigation.
"They are there now during the half term; it's such a large school and with the amount of footfall outside it's helpful to get the planning right."
She added that she had spoken to workers at the site this morning who had confirmed the leak was "really minor", but said: "It's an old gas main and eventually they will replace all of them."
Barriers have been put up around the footway near the school. Work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.
