THE final Merlin helicopter departed RAF Benson for a new life at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton this week.

The Merlin Force officially transferred to the Royal Navy in September 2014, and on Thursday the last helicopter flew to the force's new home at RNAS Yeovilton.

The Merlin came into service with the RAF in 2001 and contributed to combat and humanitarian operations for more than a decade before being transferred to the Royal Navy.

From supporting the Stabilisation Force in Bosnia to evacuating military and civilian casualties in Iraq, the medium-support helicopter made a fantastic contribution to the Royal Air Force during its service, officials said this week.

Pilots from 845 Naval Air Squadron will now fly the aircraft to RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset where they will join their colleagues who departed RAF Benson last year.

There, operating under the Commando Helicopter Force, they will continue to provide support to the Royal Marines and maritime operations across the globe.

RAF Benson station commander, Group Captain Simon Paterson, said: "Today was the end of an era as we bid a final farewell to Merlin helicopters after almost 15 years of operating from RAF Benson.

"From a personal point of view as a former OC 28 Squadron it is with some sadness that I watched the final aircraft depart and reflected on the success that the RAF has had with the Merlin.

"I also have no doubt that this success will continue with the Royal Navy. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the Commando Helicopter Force and I wish them the very best of luck as they complete their move back to RNAS Yeovilton."
