OXFORD United fans will have the chance to meet their promotion-winning heroes tomorrow when the club's family day returns.

After taking a year out last year the event will pitch up at Abingdon United, taking place around Oxford United Women's clash with London Bees.

Young fans and their families will be able to take part in a range of activities, including meeting players from both the men's and women's sides and ice hockey players from Oxford City Stars.

U's supporter services manager Sarah Gooding said it was a great chance for Yellows to get hands-on with their club.

She said: "Taking it to Abingdon United is somewhere different and we have got a great relationship with them as our youth team and women's team play there.

"There are so many opportunities for the whole family to come.

"Sometimes if the kids come to first team games they come with one parent.

"This is a great chance for the whole family to come.

"If we can get people down to meet Michael Appleton or one of the players hopefully they will come back and see them at the Kassam."

The day of events starts at 11am with a free park-and-ride service from Abingdon and Witney College to Abingdon United's Northcourt Road stadium operating first-come, first-served throughout the day.

United's first team players will be taking part in an autograph signing and selfie session from 11.30am to 12.30pm, followed by Oxford City Stars players.

A similar session will take place with the women's players after their game.

There will also be food stalls, a penalty-shoot-out competition hosted by club legend Peter Rhoades-Brown, an inflatable assault course, a bouncy castle and a bungee run.

Ms Gooding said: "All of the team will be there and will be staying there through the game, as will Michael Appleton and chairman Darryl Eales.

"A lot of our girls in our women's team have come through our academy and they are local women, which is great.

"I think it is one of those things people expect us to run but we want to make the people of Abingdon aware that Oxford United ha a big presence in their town."

Oxford United kick off their season next Saturday against Chesterfield but the women's side are already 12 games into their season and face a London Bees side two places above them in Women's Super League 2. at 2pm.

Ms Gooding said the club wanted the family day to boost interest in the women's side.

She said: "Our attendances are on the up and we are smashing our targets and we thought this was a great way of raising more awareness.

"Last season our average was less than 300 and this season it is more than 500.

"It does not sound much but in the women's game, especially at second division level it is a big jump in one season."

Advance tickets cost £4 for adults, £1.50 for over-65s and under-16s and a family ticket for four is £10.
