WILLIAM the Conqueror has invaded Wallingford – again.

While every school pupil in England knows that French forces stormed our shores in 1066, many in Oxfordshire might be unaware that their next stop was Wallingford.

A new exhibition at Wallingford Museum explores why William chose to bring his armies to cross the Thames at this point and what happened next.

The show, entitled "1066: William Comes to Wallingford" welcomed some of its first visitors this weekend, with costumed actors bringing history to life.

Museum curator Judy Dewey said: "There is certainly an intriguing story to tell and in this new exhibition all will be revealed, based on the very latest research and evidence."

Visitors can also see some of the latest discoveries from recent Wallingford archaeology, including the smallest medieval chess piece ever found in England – a beautiful object made of antler, discovered behind the museum in the dig last summer.
