PALS Vicki Erry and Samara Bolton are putting their best foot forward to tackle a 90 mile trek for charity.

The Didcot Girls' School pupils wanted to take on the challenge to raise money for Marie Curie.

In preparation for the walk from Didcot to Brighton, the girls have spent every Saturday walking 20 miles.

Samara, 15, said she had always wanted to do something to raise money for charity.

She said: "This is something I have always wanted to do and I found Marie Curie and we thought it was a very helpful charity.

"We have done quite a bit of training, we go up to 20 miles on a Saturday and five miles on a Sunday and we've done that since before summer.

"We set around £500 as our target but obviously it would be amazing if we could get more than that.

"I would love to do more fundraising."

The aspiring counsellor said she and Vicki had fundraised or borrowed all the necessary equipment and walking boots they will need for the hike.

She added: "We wanted to do all this ourselves to show we could do it.

"We wanted to make sure we had everything we needed so we would give it our best shot."

The girls will leave Didcot on Monday, October 24 and hope to reach Brighton Pier nine days later.

Vicki, also 15, said she had never taken on a challenge on this scale for charity before.

She said: "I've done small fundraisers before, like a sponsored silence, but nothing like this.

"I'm really looking forward to it and it would be brilliant if we could beat our fundraising target.

"We thought Marie Curie was a really great charity and hopefully what we are going to do will make a difference."

Vicki's mum, Emma, said she was 'extremely proud' of the girls.

She said: "I think it is amazing they have put themselves up for this.

"We have supported them as much as we can, we held a fundraiser in our local pub a few week ago, which raised about £300.

"Tesco in Abingdon has given the girls some drinks and snacks to take with them on their journey, which is extremely generous of them."

Deputy headteacher of Didcot Girls' School, Tom Goodenough, said: "Our school values are incredibly important to us at Didcot Girls' School.

"Those values are rooted in the importance of community and Vicki and Samara epitomise that spirit.

"We are very proud of them for taking on this challenge for such an important cause and wish them the best of luck."
