A SHOPPING centre under fire over its ‘sexist’ toilets has said it is reviewing the situation.
Last month, the Oxford Mail reported on concerns over the alleged ‘inequality’ of the toilets in Marriotts Walk, Witney.
Women and disabled people have to pay to use a cubicle, while men are able to use urinals free of charge.
Shopping centre bosses remained silent on the matter at the time despite repeated requests for comment from this newspaper.
Now, a month on, centre manager Simon Jones has said the toilet situation is being reviewed.
Grandmother-of-four Maggie Newton is the leader of Doing It Together To Overcome (DITTO), a charity which supports disabled and vulnerable people in and around the Witney area.
She said she was stunned to discover that women and disabled people have to pay to use the facilities while men are able to spend a penny for free.
Mrs Newton has urged the centre to charge everyone the same amount or drop the fee entirely.
Oxfordshire County councillor for Witney, Laura Price, who raised concerns about the issue last month, said: “I’m really pleased that they’re taking the issue seriously and hope that their review results in the right decision.
“Everyone deserves fair access to public toilets.”
