A VILLAGE green has become the latest Oxfordshire location to be invaded by travellers.

Residents in Steventon said several caravans had moved onto the smaller of two greens in the village, where Steventon Fair usually takes place at the end of May.

It is thought to be the same group who vacated land next to Long Furlong Primary School in Abingdon on Tuesday following a three-day stay there, though this has not been confirmed by Thames Valley Police.

The Long Furlong group were served an eviction notice by Oxfordshire County Council and ordered to leave.

Yesterday, the police force said its neighbourhood police team in Wantage had visited the travellers.

Its team tweeted: “[Officers] have undertaken patrols and had positive engagement with travelling community at Steventon this morning.”

It is understood that the travellers moved in on Tuesday, and a member of Steventon Parish Council has also been in discussion with the group.

In 2016 another group of travellers set up at the same field in Steventon, and one resident claimed they had left behind ‘human waste’.

A string of green spaces and car parks in Oxfordshire have attracted travellers in the past few months.

One resident sent in images of bags of rubbish and scorched ground from a bonfire, after travellers vacated woodland in Wantage last week.

Earlier this week Larkmead School in Abingdon also had to deal with travellers camping on its playing field.
