A HOLE the 'size of a cave' underneath a road is continuing to cause major problems with residents complaining their village has been 'cut in two'.

The wait goes on to fix Oxford Road in Garsington, a week since the tarmac collapsed, revealing a large crater below.

Thames Water fixed the initial damage, caused by a water leak, but then another hole was discovered which could stretch further under the road into the village.

Oxfordshire County Council is currently working to establish how big this hole is before it can get on with carrying out repairs.

Spokesman Martin Crabtree said today [Wednesday]: "We completed our radar ground survey yesterday and will be carrying out further investigatory excavations today.

"We hope to begin work on reinstatement in the coming days as we want to get the road reopened as soon as possible."

In a statement yesterday he said Thames Water's excavation revealed another void under the road surface, which was likely not caused by a water leak.

He added: “We do not have a precise timeframe for the repairs yet but we anticipate that the road will be closed this week.”

While the road has been shut, residents have complained of being cut off from Oxford.

No buses have been able to run with elderly visitors having to walk for 15 minutes to the Watlington Road for their nearest alternative bus stop.

Gordon Roper, who lives in the village, said: "When it first happened we looked underneath and it was like a tunnel down there.

"The road is completely closed and no traffic can get through.

"I do feel for some of the older residents who rely on the buses.

"The village is effectively cut in two at the moment."

Another resident, who asked not to be named, likened the hole to a 'cave' and said he predicted it was going to take a long time to fix.
