AN ABINGDON book shop has won a prestigious industry award.

Mostly Books, in Stert Street, has been open for just under two years, and was shortlisted for the British Book Industry Awards New Bookshop of the Year category.

Manager Mark Thornton said he and his staff were delighted to pick up the New Bookshop of the Year title at the awards ceremony in Brighton last night.

Well done Mark, and all the staff at Mostly Books, well deserved. We are indeed lucky to have a bookshop run by people with a passion for reading. Viva the independents of Abingdon!

Shame the other independent bookshop which has been open and going strong for nearly a decade does not get this publicity and recognition. A shop with a level of service and the knowledge of staff which is second to none. Does mostly books have friends in the right places?? I think so.

Unlike other independent shops, Mostly Books has a story time, book group, tea, cake and is more like a home than a shop. Please, Rosie, no sour grapes!! It's all good news for Abingdon, plus, 10 years doesn't make the other shop a NEW one, does it?
Well done, Mark and Niki!!!

If we wish Abingdon to be a place for independents to flourish then surely opening a shop in direct competition with another is not in the spirit of this? Those involved with the chamber of commerce should especially be aware of this. It is just sad that the local press do not cover all the successes of independent shops in Abingdon in quite the same way. If you were to ask the majority of Abingdonians where the local bookshop is I know where they would direct you to!
No sour grapes, I warmly congratulate Mark and Niki! Lets hope they manage to stay around in the years to come...Time is the greatest test after all!

We are lucky to have 2 independent book shops, even Oxford is full of discount chains now. Both shops are targerted at different markets, I cannot see any conflict? Would be good if the local paper supported our independent shops more rather than letting the world know how much better that awful clone town with the power station is...
