John Howell, the Conservative candidate, has comfortably won the Henley by-election with 19,796 votes.

Marking Gordon Brown's first anniversary as Prime Minister, Labour Party candidate Richard McKenzie was beaten into fifth place with a meagre 1,066 votes - losing his deposit.

Perhaps more surprising was that Labour was beaten by the Green Party and BNP candidates.

New Labour's powers of persuasion do seem limited to areas where their activist stuff ballot boxes, steal ballot boxes or postalize the vote.

The Tories probably emulate the US Gubernatorialist and win the deceased vote.

And yet the BNP party was still less popular to the likes of the Greens.

Sits back for the howls of objection at calling the BNP racist - which they are.

One swallow doesn't make a Summer.

i.e. This does not prove your point.

If/when they score a large number of votes in a predominantly 'working class' (whatever that is) area what will you say then?

It does show that a growing number of people (worringly) believe that voting for this lot is the answer though.

By the way, have you been to Henley and I don't mean just the regatta? If you explore the area a little you'll find a wide range of wealth and (what you'd call) social classes, it's reputation as a picture postcard town is quite misleading.

Go BNP Party...Get well away from the "old" BNP and start campaigning for the British people to support a British Party.
Why does this Country shy away from all things British?.
Look at the state we're in...We need to stand up and be proud of our Country again..Support ST.Georges day..Support everything we were.
And why is'nt the Government doing anything to help us Taxpayers with the fuel situation etc..Money grabbing *******. Gas, Electric is going up another 40% on top of the 15% increase already this year..What is going on???

It's a Tory stronghold. Has been for years. Tells me all I need to know about the social mix there.
The fact you deny the existence of social difference merely indicates its a rather sheltered area.

Besides there are places like Barking and Dagenham where the BNP have managed to convince people with social anxieties that its immigrants (especially asians) that are to blame.
It is still a bourgeois led party and thus of no real relevance to estate dwellers.

My Right - Fuel bill charges are at the mercy of privatised companies who are more worried about paying dividends to the Henley set. Do you really think that a party even more deeply right wing than the Conservatives (who privatised these companies) are going to lower these costs for you? I don't think so.

Anyway, I can't actually see a link between being 'British' and fuel costs. High fuel costs are a global problem. If Gordon Brown reduces fuel duty on petrol then the money will have to come from somewhere else. At least you have the option to use less fuel...

Oh ignore Alan Page- he would have voted for Robert Mugabe, as they both have a deep seated hatred of successful white people, take every opportunity to knock the British, and would rather preside over lawlessness, chaos, poverty and misery than admit that educated middle class white people are responsible for most of the advances of the last few centuries.

I think what the Nu-Labour Alan Page really means, is that he doesn't approve of any social mix that doesn't conform to his Stalinist ideals. Social mix isn't a problem to a democrat - ot's only a problem to the new fascists of the Left.

The predictions that we made for a certain Labour win at Henley are to be found a little wide of the mark, our usual policy of predicting ANY election result as too close to call was also badly judged as usual. We will in future try to get a more broadly based sample from canvas returns and not follow too closely the Labour Candidate on his/her door-knocking campaign trail.

Hey Bob/Dan/sockpuppets are us, if you want to hold conversations with yourself all very well and good just keep me out of it.

I think anybody with a brain would see the situation in Africa as complex.

People with brains would also be aware that it is possible to oppose both apartheid and tyrants who have used that to follow some kind of monomaniacal ego trip through.

It is why the former allies of Mugabe in the anti apartheid struggle are rightly turning against him.

Dan stills sees himself as "educated", humour can nor farther go.

Oh, I am sitting pretty here. We've just had a pub closed down because of junkie infestation.

Third safest place in the country to live apparently. As opposed to Oxford which is not only the 11th most dangerous outside London.

There's hilarious passage in "Time Was" where W.Graham Robertson describes his amazement at being asked to write a ballad to accompany a ballet in one of Shakespeare's plays.

"You can't do that, its holy writ, we'll be run out of town."

"You really believe the brits actually read Shakespeare?"

Anyway he finally agrees. Far from being booed, it proves the highlight of the evening. This, is what the "educated, white, middleclasses" are capable of.

I think you may find, as Fourier pointed out, that intelligence is pretty blind to social classes and colour. And it is those who are gifted with that intelligence that change the world, not the fat bombastic, vacuously dreary businessmen who cling so desperatly to their coat tails to make themselves look less of a witchburner than they are.

You obviously have no grasp of geography either, who mentioned Oxford? Henley is 25 miles from Oxford.

In all my time reading the comments on various subjects in the Herald, I have never come across someone who must be so mindnumbingly bored that he needs to comment on subjects that are in a paper that is in a different county to his!!!! You are a very sad little man who obviously gets very excited about different local papers. What will it be tomorrow.......the Skegness Argus?!!!....."I'm Alan Page......I can barely contain myself....there's a local election.....quick, must think of some tedious comments on the subjects that don't even relate to my life........how hilarious, everyone will love me!" More than a dozen killers and nearly 140 sex offenders have been deported from Britain since the start of the year, the Home Office said.

Immigration minister Liam Byrne revealed the figures as part of an update on the total number of foreign criminals removed from the country.

Overall, 2,417 foreign offenders were deported in the first six months of the year, a 22% increase on the same point in 2007.
