Officers across the Vale of the White Horse have been given an extra set of eyes on their patrols in the form of body-worn cameras.

The mini cameras, which will be worn on the chest, have been purchased using a grant from the Home Office, further supported by funding from the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

Officers in Abingdon, Faringdon, Wantage and the surrounding area started wearing the equipment this month. This includes a compact lightweight digital camera mounted onto the officers' uniform which transmits images via a cable to a small digital video recorder worn on the officer's belt. The camera also has a microphone and works equally well during daylight and at night.

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and response officers will wear the cameras as a deterrent and evidence gathering measure.

Positive feedback has already been received from officers who have trialled the equipment in West Oxfordshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, Reading and Aylesbury.

Sgt James Blackburn, based at Abingdon police station, said: "Police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) working in the Vale will be equipped with these cameras.

"Having this form of recording equipment is an exciting advance in technology that could contribute to our ability to secure evidence at crimes that we attend in the Vale of the White Horse.

"They provide the sound and the vision to capture real life situations that can then be presented at court if required. This should add to our traditional statements by providing a richer picture through true representation.

"We will be using modern technology to our advantage; contributing to community safety, helping us to meet the priorities of the neighbourhoods and using the cameras as a deterrent to warn off any would-be offenders."

"Signs informing the public that body worn video equipment may be used within their communities will be prominently displayed and officers wearing the kit will also wear an identification armband."

Maybe they will sell the recordings to SKY so we can see some more Police state propoganda about how busy they all are fighting crime for arresting people for driving 1 mile over the limit or dropping a sweetie wrapper whilst off camera, thugs murder grannies and get away with abusive behaviour (all unrecorded of course)

If you think you could do a better job, why don't you? I'm sick of people constantly slagging the police off!!

Talk about propaganda (learn to spell it first!), nobody is ever arrested for driving 1mph over the speed limit. In fact it is very rare for anyone to be arrested for driving over the speed limit at all, you do not know what you are talking about. Also in terms of seeing police in Abingdon they are there but only at specific times. Thurs to Sat evenings there is a reasonable presence in the town on foot. I think you need to think through what is good use of the small resources available to the police as well. A policeman on foot can only respond to crime in a very small area whereas a panda can do a much larger range. The town is well covered by cctv so what is the use of police on foot in the centre?

Jess, it is very easy for ignorant people to slag off the police without thinking it through or suggesting better ways of doing things. I suggest such people go to the police station and request a ride-along and see what it is really like. They don't get it right all of the time but it would give an appreciation of what a difficult job it is.....I would not want to do it!

they get slagged off for a reason and that's because there a f@@ing joke!
They are never there when needed and if they do 'EVENTUALLY' turn up they manage to do f@@k all about it,that might be something to do with it!

These "specific times" would be breakfast, lunch & tea, oh and perhaps a late night snack for the night shift. Can't expect the hard working bobby's to fight crime on an empty stomach can we?

BW, sarcasm, the last retreat of someone who has nothing to say. Why should anyone do any job on an empty stomach ....I bet you don't? As for lmfao, any good points you may have made are ruined by your need to puntuate every sentence with swearing.....why? Because you had no good points and you think it is amusing!
