New Mini concept unveiled

DETAILS of the latest Mini concept car have been unveiled.

The Beachcomber is an open-sided four-wheel-drive leisure vehicle with a removable roof and will go on display at the Detroit Motor Show in the United States on January 16 next year.

Bosses at parent firm BMW admit the car is deliberately designed to be driven on beaches and has been inspired by the Mini Moke, first launched in 1964, which went on to sell 14,500 cars, particularly in sunny countries such as Australia.

The car follows in the tyre tracks of previous concepts the Roadster and the Coupé, which BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer revealed in September would go into full production at the Cowley plant.

But BMW said the Beachcomber was unlikely to reach that stage and is intended as a possible development for the Crossover four-wheel-drive Mini, which is due to be built from next autumn.
