A SCHOOL choir is buzzing with excitement after a visit from a member of legendary soul group The Drifters.

Twenty pupils from Appleton Primary School will perform alongside the American vocal group at the New Theatre in Oxford.

And singer Michael Williams popped in to hear them sing ahead of next month’s show.

Headteacher Mary Watts said: “The children sang songs that they had learnt especially for him and I think he was just stunned at how good they were.

“He rehearsed with the children and showed them some dance moves they could use on stage.”

She added: “They are just so excited and so is the whole school.”

The choir will sing the song Hero by M People alongside the four-piece group.

Music teacher Lizzie Soden said: “They are very excited about doing a proper gig on stage with professional musicians.

“The feeling in the school is one of sheer panic and excitement.”

Ten-year-old Erin Parkinson said: “It is very exciting and I am quite nervous, but it should be good experience and fun.”

Ethan Clarke, 10, added: “It is a really good opportunity to perform with professionals and it will be very inspiring.”

The Drifters have sold more than 114m albums and more than 214m singles. Their hits include Under the Boardwalk, Saturday Night at the Movies, and Up on the Roof.

The group is performing with 22 primary schools during their UK tour.

Mr Williams said: “We have been completely overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and excitement of the children — it is a very special project to be involved in.”
