BY the time you read this, Ensar Gol should be starting a life sentence for the double murder of his wife and her mother.

The fact that Gol was deemed sane to stand trial was originally a little hard to believe, given his bizarre behaviour in court and his ludicrous defence.

Gol, who pleaded not guilty and therefore prolonged the agony of victims’ relatives, smirked and giggled and trotted out what must rank as one of the weakest defences ever heard at Oxford Crown Court.

He may have found the whole thing funny, but his actions on that day were deadly serious and, crucially, premeditated.

Gol’s behaviour paints a picture of a man who, while clearly dangerous, was crucially not deranged. He was responsible for his actions that night and his antics show he is nothing more than a callous man who arrogantly has a disregard for anyone and everyone. Thank heavens he is behind bars. Maybe the prospect of a 30-year jail term will finally wipe the evil grin off his face.
