PO shop a first

The first shop to offer post office services over the counter in Oxfordshire has opened.

The shop, in North Street, Marcham, is the first Post Office Local and is staffed entirely by volunteers. It was officially opened by MP Ed Vaizey yesterday.

The shop is open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 7.30am to 1pm.

"The first shop to offer post office services over the counter in Oxfordshire has opened." Does this mean as opposed to sub-post offices, because there have been loads of them shut down recently?

And with no staff wages to cover Fellingsmatter, somebody is making a pretty penny. What a great idea, close all of the paid ones and sack all the staff, only to replace them with free labour. I wonder who could have thought that one up?

This is the negative side of community shops. The do gooders that open them want the money for the post office themselves so shut down the real po with paid workers and then dont offer all the services. Only losers are the local community.

Our village campaigned to keep our local sub-post office going and it was situated in our local shop. This alternative was not suggested to my knowledge. So what has happened to allow post offices to be run from a shop counter? Perhaps other former sub-post offices would have done it to keep customers coming in if there had been a choice.
