Thousands of Hampshire residents have been left without power after a transformer caught fire.

The power cut affected homes and businesses in the Sholing, Hightown and Thornhill areas of Southampton, as well as Hedge End and Botley.

A spokesperson for Scottish Southern Electric said that around 3,500 customers had been affected.

Traffic lights in Burseldon Road were out while Eastpoint Centre and Itchen College were also left without electricity.

And a group of residents in Dumbleton Towers, Thornhill were left stuck in a lift after power to the high rise was cut off.

A spokesman from Hightown Fire Station said the power cut was caused after a fire knocked out the generator at the back of Meredith Towers in Tunstall Road, Thornhill, at around 1pm.

Power has now been restored to the majority of the homes affected.

Engineers are on the scene attempting to restore power to the remaining households hit by the blackout.
