INK stains will not be a problem for students who will be putting their stationery away for No Pens Day – much to the envy of Oxfordshire schoolchildren.

The event is dedicated to developing communication skills and the role of language in learning, with activities focused on speaking and listening rather than reading and writing.

The Unicorn School in Abingdon, for children with dyslexia and related difficulties, will be taking part on Friday November 7, during National Dyslexia Awareness Week.

Headteacher Jackie Vaux explained: “Our pupils and our teachers are wonderfully creative and will really enjoy the chance to celebrate their strengths through story-telling, debate, hot seating and drama, across the curriculum.”

Organised by the charity Communication Trust, an estimated one million children nationwide will take part in No Pens Day.

According to The Unicorn School’s Speech and Language specialist Lucinda Allison: “Developing good communication skills can have a profoundly positive affect on children’s lives, influencing their behaviour, their social development and their academic performance.

“No Pens Day is a wonderful opportunity for the whole nation to celebrate different ways of learning through speaking and listening.”
