A CONTROVERSIAL plan for two pedestrian crossings in Abingdon will be reviewed today by councillors.

Oxfordshire County Council’s performance scrutiny committee will examine the decision made last month by the cabinet member for transport, David Nimmo Smith, to allow the crossings to be built.

His decision, criticised by residents, has been called in for scrutiny by Abingdon South county councillor Neil Fawcett and nine others, including Abingdon Town Council leader Sandy Lovatt.

A Government planning inspector granted permission for a 160-home estate off Drayton Road, after an appeal hearing, on the condition the crossings were provided. The committee meeting at County Hall, in New Road, Oxford, which starts at 1pm, will decide whether or not to refer Mr Nimmo Smith’s decision to approve the crossings back to the council’s cabinet.

Mr Nimmo Smith’s approval was a U-turn, after he originally decided in March to refuse the plan for the crossings.
