RESIDENTS in Botley, Abingdon, Faringdon and Wantage will be asked for their opinions on a new design guide for developments.

Vale of White Horse District Council has created the new scheme to ensure new houses and offices are “in keeping with their surroundings”.

The council said it has “completely overhauled and significantly extended the scope” of its current guide.

It will publish a draft version on Friday and residents will be able to make comments until December 19.

The council said in a statement: “One of the best things about living in the Vale is its special mix of rural villages and thriving market towns, alongside hi-tech and cutting-edge businesses, all set against a backdrop of beautiful countryside with a rich history and heritage.

“Any new housing will impact on the character of our towns and villages, and one of our important jobs is to make sure that such impacts are kept to a minimum.

“One way of maintaining the positive aspects of the Vale, including quality of life of both existing and new residents, is to make sure all new developments are of a high standard, wel- designed and in keeping with their surroundings.”

The new guide will cover developments from domestic extensions to large housing estates and new offices.

Planning officers will use the checklist when they assess planning applications.
