YOUNG people have been busy creating a memorial garden for their secondary school this week.

Pupils at Abingdon’s Larkmead School spent the last two days building their garden in time for Armistice Day on Tuesday.

To mark the occasion, representatives of the Royal British Legion visited the school yesterday.

Royal British Legion South East Midlands area manager Mark Collins said: “I am delighted to be involved with this innovative Memorial Garden project commemorating the centenary of the First World War.

“It is so important that we remember the fallen and continue our commitment to the future of the living.”

Students at the Faringdon Road school have been working on the project with the Oxfordshire and Thames Valley branch of young people’s charity Skillforce.

Mr Collins said: “I am encouraged to see the enthusiasm of the children of the Larkmead School, led by the Oxfordshire and Thames Valley Skillforce team.

“Together they have built a lasting visual legacy that they will see and maintain as they go about their daily business.”

Work on the garden began yesterday before students put the finishing touches to the memorial today. Year 11 student Kaleigh Cox said: “This is an experience we won’t forget. It’s a nice thing to do for the community, it shows young people care.”
