CHRISTMAS has become cheaper for one Abingdon family after winning a hamper of food worth £100 through the Oxford Mail.

Sainsbury’s in Kidlington donated the festive food for our competition, which saw more than 100 people from all over the county enter for the chance of an extra Christmas gift.

The lucky winner was Beverly Berry who lives with her family in Longworth, near Abingdon.

The 46-year-old said: “I was flipping through the paper and thought I would enter.

“I sent off a postal application then forgot all about it.

“Then I got a call saying I’d won which was a nice surprise. I was overjoyed when they said I’d won.”

Her slip was randomly chosen as the winner from 80 postal entries and 22 online entries, all trying to get the festive food hamper filled with Taste the Difference goodies.

Mrs Berry, a cleaner, said: “There’s tonnes of food in there, loads and loads.

“There’s a Christmas cake – which is very nice – wine, biscuits, chutneys, sauces, stuffing, mince pies, sausages, all sorts. It’s definitely going to save me a lot of money and time.”

Married to Richard and mum to Jack, 21, Ben, 18, Luke, 14, and three-year-old Alfie, she said: “We just have Christmas at home with the family.

“We’ll have a Christmas lunch with the boys. They’re excited they’ve got a whole load of Christmas goodies to look forward to.

“It’s more expensive stuff than I would normally buy so it’s a real treat.”

Sainsbury’s manager Kevin Morton said: “The hamper was a collection of Sainbury’s festive goods.

“I was very pleased for Mrs Berry and her family. I think the proud participant was thrilled to win, she said she was chuffed to bits.

“It’s great to be able to give somebody something that they don’t expect, especially at this time of year.”

Oxford Mail promotions manager Jo Coady said: “It’s great that we were able to work with Sainsbury’s to hold this competition.

“We wanted to spread a bit of festive cheer to a family in Oxfordshire.”
