STUDENTS became baking stars in a competition judged by Great British Bake Off finalist Christine Wallace.

The competition held at The Manor Prep School in Abingdon on Monday was judged by the 2013 contestant.

Nine finalists were chosen out of 100 to bake their own ‘showstopper’ for Mrs Wallace to judge.

The winner was Lara Kalafatis, aged eight, from Sutton Courtenay who created a teddy bear’s picnic cake.

She said: “I’m really pleased to have won, the cake took me a day to make and I got my idea from the school mascot, Manor Ted.”

Lara will enjoy a children’s cookery course at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton, donated by the school PTA.

Catherine Duff, who will be teaching cookery at the school next year, came up with the idea: “I was blown away not only by the baking expertise of the children, but how they were able to get flavour into their cakes, at the same time as creating stunning designs.

“The effort the children have gone to was fantastic and I am looking forward to running the competition next year.”
